2010 update

hey, kiddies. got something to share with ya:

well, I’d like to inform you the first part of this uphill battle is over:
in late december I finished recording my first solo album,
which is to be titled beautiful insults and compromises.
it has taken so long I almost titled it dominican democracy. heh, heh.
but that would not be fair since this is not the original BI&C.

you see, in nov of '07 the henry mena ego trip
entered avatar studios to begin the sessions for the record.
later, having completed about 75% of it,
my co-producer and longtime collaborator
brian montgomery and I, were prevented from completing work on it
due to logistical reasons and incompatible itineraries.
(and, lest we forget, that old chestnut, "budgetary concerns.")
but brian and I still hope to wrap that project up...one of these days.
meanwhile, there is this kind of BI&C version 2.0 to contend with...

so, as time went by, I kept writing.
and one fine day, I found myself with more than 2 dozen new songs.
some weeks ago I decided to choose from that bunch
the ones closer to completion for this album.

and it’s gonna be one schizophrenic album, alright:
punk and new wave elements
alongside acoustic guitar and piano ballads;
power pop and hints of led zeppelin sharing space
with synth pop and pure rock and roll.
(my musical dna? hmm...) hey, it is what it is.

interestingly, while most of these songs were written
in the last year or so, there are a couple written in the last few weeks;
one in particular recently appeared bearing complete music and lyrics!

as we all know, when the muse knocks on your door
you answer and place yourself at her service,
otherwise she gets cranky and fails to show up for ages.
you know what I mean.

so.
now, on to the mix and…uncertainty. as usual. heh, heh.
but if it's true that what’s important is the journey
and not the destination, it has been a fun and satisfying ride
undertaking this latest adventure. not that I had an option, anyway.

soon we will share these songs together.
and thanks again for the words of encouragement and support.
you all, as they say, rock.

cheers,
-hm
